Vernier sensors

Overview

Vernier is a company that makes plug-and-play sensors for hands-on science education.

We supply many Vernier sensors to BMEN classes for their labs, and students (outside of BMEN) are welcome to check out sensors directly from the Electronics Center as well. These are the Vernier sensors you can check out from the ITLL: link to inventory

How to connect to a Vernier Sensor

The easiest way to log data from a Vernier sensor is by plugging it in to a LabQuest DAQ, connecting the LabQuest to a computer via USB, and recording data using the free Vernier Graphical Analysis software.

If your class requires you to use LabVIEW, or you just prefer using LabVIEW for data acquisition, there is an option to read Vernier sensors in to a LabView VI program.

Step by step instructions to read Vernier sensors in LabVIEW (if you don't want to use LabVIEW, follow steps 1-8):

  1. Install Vernier Graphical Analysis

  3. Plug in your sensor to the LabQuest DAQ, connect LabQuest to computer via USB cable.
  4. Launch Vernier Graphical Analysis
  5. Select "Sensor Data Acquisition"
  6. Hit "Collect" (top middle of screen) and verify sensor/software functionality

  10. Follow the instructions from Vernier (screenshot above). The ReadMe.text file truly guides you through everything you need to do to get LabVIEW interfacing correctly with Vernier.
  11. Launch an example file VI such as "LQ Analog Starter.vi"
  12. Read in your data!
